Trends Driving the Automotive Industry in 2018

Trends Driving the Automotive Industry in 2018With fast technological advancement and constant development in the auto market, the world is looking for constant innovation. In terms of revenue, the automotive industry is one of the world’s most important industries and it is an industry that is constantly looking to develop the best technology available for their customers.

Autonomous driving, electrification and connectivity are a must in today's market. The automotive industry has learned that they have to meet clients needs in terms of providing a total digital experience when they are researching, purchasing or operating a car. These are the trends that are now transforming the automotive industry and will continue to do so for the next few years.

 Automation

Automation is the word of the future. Autonomous vehicles are very close to becoming part of our reality. Self-Driving cars may seem impossible to some, but it is a close reality to others. Think about all the driver-assistance systems you can get when purchasing a vehicle today. From emergency braking, to backup cameras and self-parking systems--you are served with all types of technology to help you on your driving journey. The task of driving will be soon taken over by vehicle’s electronics and you will be able to sit back and enjoy the ride.

Electric Vehicles

Lower battery costs and 100% environmentally friendly is what make electric vehicles so competitive in today’s market. With gas prices fluctuating day by day, automakers are investing more in developing electric vehicles. In order to fit in today’s world, where global warming is a big concern and where people want to reduce ecological damage, the automotive industry is having to create vehicles that have less impact on the environment.

Electric cars are powered by electricity and rechargeable batteries and when customers know they can buy a product that will help them save money and at the same time help the environment they are most likely to go for it.

Connectivity

Another trend for 2018, is that customers are increasingly attracted to vehicles with technology packages that can connect their driving experience with a smartphone.

Connectivity is seen today as an essential need, and drivers want to be connected to the world while driving. Nobody wants to be “offline” at any time of the day, but companies need to be careful when trying to integrate smartphone functions into vehicles. Low-distraction integration for drivers is a must. Vehicle-integrated systems ”are designed to be used in the driving environment and require driver attention that is comparable to tuning the radio or adjusting climate controls, which have always been considered baseline acceptable behaviours while driving”, said Wade Newton from Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers.

 Aftermarket Service

Another strong trend in the automotive industry over the last few years has been the preference of consumers for preventative maintenance and scheduled servicing, to prolong the value of their vehicles. This results in a growth of the aftermarket industry for automotive services and parts. Customer satisfaction has a big impact on the after-sales market, and in order to deliver great service, auto dealerships that offer auto repairs should be careful to stay focused on the total customer experience.

Many companies have a hard time managing their parts inventory and that can lead to service delays, creating customer disappointment. If a dealership has good parts inventory management, they are on the road to meeting customer expectations and optimizing their costs.

The automotive industry has always moved very fast and will continue to do so. We are most likely to see more changes and innovations in the next 5 years than we have seen in the last 25 years!  Paying attention to trends, putting in place solid processes and best practices, will help lead auto-related companies to success.
